The European Landscape Convention The European Landscape Convention of the Council of Europe promotes the protection, management and planning of the landscapes and organises international co-operation on landscape issues. Adopted in Florence (Italy) on 20 October 2000, the European Landscape Convention is aimed at promoting the protection, management and planning of European landscapes and organising European cooperation on landscape issues. It is the first international treaty to be exclusively concerned with all dimensions of European landscape. Terms used in the Convention are defined to ensure that they are interpreted in the same way: landscape, landscape policy, landscape quality objective, landscape protection, management and planning.

The ELC provides an integrated, holistic approach and international context for landscape, under the headline banner that "All Landscapes Matter".
